Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Fes: Exploring the Imperial City and medieval Medina

Fes is the oldest of the imperial cities in Morocco (Meknes, Marrakech, and Rabat are the others) and perhaps the most interesting to explore. A UNESCO protected site, the city hasn’t undergone much colonial development, leaving you to experience its medieval charm. Fes consists of two old medina quarters, Fes el Bali (and where you will spend most of your time) and Fes el Jdid (a slightly newer part of the city), and the early 20th-century French designed Ville Nouvelle. Meet your guide to help you navigate the narrow and maze-like ancient streets of the medinas, starting in Fes el Bali (789 ACE).

Note the Spanish and Tunisian influenced architecture as you pass the variety of souks (markets) offering spices, leather goods, and pewter. Known for its tanneries and the acrid smell associated with them, visit the popular Chouara Tannery and climb to the roof of a nearby shop for a better view of the goings-on. Visit the 14th-century Al Attarine Madrasa and admire the zellij tile work before checking out one of the oldest, still operating universities in the world, Al-Qarawiyyin University (859 ACE). Find the mellah (old Jewish quarter) in Fes el Jdid for another encompassing view of the city.

Day 2: Over the Middle Atlas and into the desert: Erfoud, Merzouga, and the Sahara

Over the Middle Atlas, continue south. When you drive to Midelt, the “apple city,” for lunch, you’ll witness Barbary macaque monkey families in the trees and along the road. Enjoy the Moulouya River and apple orchards. Next, cross the Tizi n’Talremt pass into the Ziz Valley’s oasis and palm trees. In Erfoud, the Sahara sand dunes begin to appear. Merchants erected several ksars to preserve their goods. Winds move the dunes. You may meet a nomadic Berber household and enjoy tea together. Visit Erfoud to see how its miners turn fossil-rich rock into colorful and useful items. Erg Chebbi’s vast sand dunes await.

After Merzouga, slow down for a camel ride into the dunes to camp before dusk. Climb the closest sand dune to see the sunset over the massive dunes. Return to camp for supper and a night of Berber music around the campfire. Sleep in a Bedouin tent.

Day 3 :  Merzouga – Berber Families – Black Desert – Merzouga (Camel Ride & Night in Sahara)

After breakfast in the hotel you’ll start your exploitative journey of the area, visiting the ‘village of the blacks’, originally slaves from Sudan to experience their music and lifestyle. Not far away there’s the lake of Merzouga, with its bird populations, including flamingos. You may also like to visit the nomad warehouse where many Berber handicrafts are priced lower than in the big cities. On the afternoon you will mount your camel, guided by an experienced Camel man, to explore inside the mysterious sand-sea of the Erg-Chebbi. Here you’ll spend your first night under the stars, or if you prefer, in a traditional Berber nomad tent. Dinner will be served in the tent where you will spend the night. Dinner Bed and Breakfast.

Day 4 :  Merzouga –Errachidia – Midelt – Azrou – Ifran – Fes

After seeing the sunrise in the desert, we go back on camels to Merzouga. After breakfast, shower in the Hotel then starts our journey to Midelt, passing through Errachidia and the spectacular Ziz Valley. Then we stop for lunch in Midalt, we keep going through Azrou to stop and wander around the fabulous forest surrounded with monkeys, we stop as well in Ifran to pay a visit to the Switzerland of Morocco Ifran to take pictures then we head back Again To Fes for the night at the Riad.

Day 5:  Roman ruins at Volubilis and imperial cities of Meknes

Early risers will enjoy photographing vacant, scenic streets. Day travel from Fes to Meknes with your driver. Visit UNESCO-protected Volubilis. The 3rd-century BCE structure was abandoned approximately 1,000 years later. It flourished in one of the Roman Empire’s most isolated regions. Meknes—a good method to prepare for the majestic middle-aged and Imperial city. The Ville Impériale and navigable medina are Meknes’ primary attractions. Fortified city-within-a-city with palaces, mosques, prisons, and gardens. The dungeons, royal stables, and Moulay Ismael Mausoleum—one of the few sacred locations non-Muslims may enter—are the highlights.

Day 6:  Departure

Depending on your flight details, you may wish to wander around, consider the Merindis Tombs, the extensive view of the Old Medina. Or, stick closer to Bab Boujloud and visit the Jnan Sbil Garden, the Melah. If time allows, take a respite in Café Clock before transferring to the airport for your return flight home.
